Until we notice a problem with our eyes or vision, most of us tend to take our eye health for granted. Fortunately, many of the most common issues related to eye health can be resolved with proper care and hygiene practices. 1. What Are “Floaters” and Why Do I Have Them?
Have you ever noticed a small spot, squiggly line or other seemingly foreign object blocking your field of vision? Contrary to popular belief, these so-called floaters are not caused by dust particles or other external substances. Instead, most floaters happen due to natural changes in the jelly-like fluid that internally supports your eyes. When this substance, called vitreous, starts to thin, clumps of tiny fibers within the vitreous may form, causing the appearance of a floating object in your eye .
2. Can Long Periods of Computer Use Hurt My Eyes?
This has become one of the most common questions about eye health, as more and more people now work at their computers for several hours at a time on a regular basis. Although the jury is still out on whether or not long-term computer use can affect your vision, we do know that it can lead to short-term symptoms of a condition known as a computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain.
Computer vision syndrome happens when you’ve been staring at a computer, tablet, smartphone or other screened device for a long time without taking a break. The most common signs of this condition are:
- Dry, sore eyes
- Excessive tearing or redness
- Blurred vision
- Back, shoulder and neck pain
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, take a break from your computer, even for just 20 seconds at a time. Try looking away at something at least 20 feet away, and do this every 20 minutes or so .
3. Why Do My Eyes Feel So Dry?
There are several factors that can contribute to signs of dry eye syndrome, including:
- An inflammatory eye condition called blepharitis
- Menopause and the natural aging process
- Certain medications
- Eye allergies
- LASIK eye surgery
- Contact lenses
- Computer use
Depending on the exact cause or causes of your dry eye syndrome, the most appropriate treatment and management methods can vary. For some people, adding an omega-3 fatty acid supplement to their diets can help to increase the production and secretion of natural oils in the eye. For others, using a gentle eyelid cleansing product can help to alleviate inflammation and eliminate mites and other microscopic particles that can cause it.
4. Why Is My Eyelid Twitching?
While having a twitching eyelid might seem alarming at first, the truth is that in most cases, this is a temporary phenomenon that will eventually resolve itself. However, if you find that one or both eyelids are twitching for a very long time without stopping or very frequently, you may need to take steps to get better sleep, reduce stress and adopt regular eyelid cleansing habits.

5. Which Personal Care Products Are Safe to Use on My Eyelids?
None, really, unless they are designed specifically for the delicate eye area. This goes for baby shampoos and other baby products, as well. Even though a product may be gentle enough to be used on infant skin and hair doesn’t necessarily mean that it is gentle enough to be used near your eyes. In fact, many baby shampoos and similar products contain fragrances, preservatives, sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients that can irritate your eyes and the surrounding skin.
